With National Tequila Day (24th July) fast approaching, how better to celebrate than with a tequila or two? To honour this very important day, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite bottles from the best brands on the market. These aren’t tequilas to knock back with a lick of salt, a suck of lime and a grimace. These are sip-worthy spirits to savour – whether neat, topped with tonic or mixed in a classic margarita or paloma.
Maestro Dobel Añejo Tequila
Maestro Dobel's premium Añejo Tequila uses 100% single-estate agave and is aged in fire-charred American new oak barrels for at least 18 months, lending the resulting spirit notes of sweetness, nuttiness and a touch of smokiness. Try serving it in place of bourbon in an Old Fashioned.
Volcán de mi Tierra Blanco Tahona
An homage to the volcanic terroir and rich heritage of tequila, Volcán de mi Tierra’s Blanco Tahona is made with 100% blue agave that’s been cooked and crushed with a tahona, a special wheel made from the same volcanic rock in which the plants were grown. The result is a silky smooth tequila that’s easily sipped, packaged beautifully in a striking bottle intended to resemble a volcano.
Herradura Reposado Tequila
The world’s first commercial Reposado, Herradura Reposado launched in 1974 and has remained a firm fixture in the drinks cabinets of many a tequila lover since. It’s aged for 11 months in oak barrels, resulting in subtle hints of dry oak, sandalwood and roasted agave on the palate. It’s no surprise it was awarded a double Gold medal from the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Patrón Reposado Tequila
Handcrafted from 100% blue Weber agave, distilled in small batches in Jalisco, Mexico and then aged in oak barrels for over four months, Patrón’s Reposado encapsulates the brand’s commitment to quality. This tequila blends the clean, crisp taste of Patrón Silver with the oakiness of Patrón Añejo for a distinctive and complex flavour that will delight even the most discerning of tequila aficionados.
Pancho Datos Reposado Tequila
Pancho Datos’s Reposado is meticulously crafted: the agave is aged for at least six years before being cooked for two-to-three days in a stone oven. Next, the agave is fermented, and then double distilled before resting for ten months. Vanilla and caramel notes are imparted by the cask, while an earthy spiciness from the agave runs through.
Avión Silver
Crafted from hand picked blue agave grown at the highest elevations in Los Altos, where the volcanic soils impart some of their mineral characteristics into the tequila, Avión Silver is a small-batch blanco tequila that has a clean, velvet feel, making it equally ideal for sipping as mixing.
Clase Azul Tequila Reposado
Clase Azul’s signature tequila, beautifully packaged in an intricately hand-decorated ceramic decanter, is masterfully aged for eight months in American whiskey casks for a super-smooth finish. Gold in colour, it features tasting notes of agave nectar, ripe orange peel and bittersweet chocolate.
Casamigos Blanco
The brainchild of Rande Gerber, Mike Meldman and George Clooney, Casamigos began as the trio’s own private ‘house tequila’, before they realised just how good it was, and decided to share it with the world. The company’s Blanco tequila is a light and refreshing spirit that’s made from 100% blue Weber agave grown in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico.
Don Julio 1942
Don Julio 1942 pays tribute to the year that the legendary Don Julio González began his tequila-making journey. Made in Mexico in small batches from 100% blue Weber agave, it’s aged for up to two and a half years in American white oak casks, before being decanted into an elegant tapered bottle that recalls the shape of an agave leaf.
