The LA list: What to do in LA in September 2024

From Shakespeare to street food, here's what to do in LA this September

The calendar may be telling you that fall is upon us. And if you’re reading this from afar, that may be well and true. But for those in Los Angeles, we know full well that we’re going to be showered with golden rays of sunshine right up until next summer when the one season cycle begins anew. Owing to the glistening golden rays and the simultaneously balmy and breezy climate of the Southern California coast, the majority of our suggestions this September take place outdoors in the fresh air.

Anderson .Paak at The Hollywood Bowl

“God is in the details, and so is Anderson. Paak.” These are the words that our editor used to open the cover story of the spring 2024 issue of Gentleman’s Journal featuring Mr. .Paak. We, along with millions of others around the world, hold Anderson .Paak in the highest esteem so it shouldn't come as a surprise that his performance at the Hollywood Bowl is at the top of our list of must dos this September in Los Angeles. To further elevate the bar of musical excellence, he will be accompanied by an orchestra, guaranteeing nothing short of an auditory revelation.

An Evening with Fran Lebowitz

Having driven taxis, peddled belts, and cleaned apartments, her resume alone is about as New York as it gets. Even her famous friendship with Scorsese feels especially New York to us. One of the great character traits of any great New York is their unapologetic honesty and Fran Lebowitz epitomises exactly that. During An Evening with Fran Lebowitz, she will be providing opinionated social commentary on the state of the world today, discussing everything from current events to her pet peeves. The evening will round up with an audience Q&A and finally, a book signing.

Griffith Park Shakespeare Festival

Independent Shakespeare Company’s Summer 2024 festival is coming to a close on September 1st with a final spectacular performance of As You Like It. In the hour preceding the show, there will be an immersive prologue to help *set the stage* for what is to come. As for the venue, Griffith Park will play host. Located in the mountains above Los Feliz, the grand views across Los Angeles may themselves be a showstopper. These views give special weight to the line “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players”.

Jazz at LACMA

One of the world’s greatest drummers will be taking the stage at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on September 6th, along with his trio for an evening of jazz. Peter Erskine solidified himself within the world of percussion many years ago, having played for the likes of Steely Dan, Tony Williams, and even Bob Dylan. Naturally, the Peter Erskine Trio includes the world renowned Alan Pasqua on the keys and Darek Oleg on the bass. For fans of jazz, you may find different acts out there, but you won’t find better.

The Benjamin Hollywood

The modern take on classic American gastronomy perfectly suits The Benjamin, designed with old Hollywood hangouts for inspiration. The tastefully curated art deco aesthetic is so befitting that we believe it actually serves to make the wedge salads and wagyu burgers taste better. In fact, the art deco facade of the building was, in itself, the tipping point that convinced owners Ben Shenassafar and Jared Meisler to create this homage to classic Hollywood hangouts. Make a reservation and take a trip back in time to Hollywood’s golden era.
