Canada Goose and Henry Poole collaborate on the ultimate travel jacket

So says Simon Cundey, Managing Director of iconic English tailors Henry Poole & Co. Of course, then, when we were invited to preview the fruits of an exclusive collaboration between the British institution and Canadian coatmakers, launching on Friday 18th January, we were most intrigued.

Here are Gentleman’s Journal, we never venture to a country colder than the UK without packing our trusted Canada Goose jacket. And, when it comes to buying a beautiful, bespoke suit, there are over 210 years of good reasons to head straight to Henry Poole & Co on Savile Row.

It’s an unexpected pairing, undoubtedly. But, considered, it also makes sense. Both are celebrated pioneers in their fields: the performance outerwear manufacturers are widely recognised as Canada’s ‘first luxury brand’, and the English bespoke tailors the ‘founders’ of Savile Row.

And, where Henry Poole invented the dinner jacket, Canada Goose’s founder David Reiss invented the revolutionary down-filling machine back in the 1970s.

So when you combine the bespoke tailoring expertise of Henry Poole with the deep knowledge of all things down from Canada Goose, you know you’ll be in safe — and very warm — hands.

And the proof is in the products. Together, the brands have developed two truly must-have pieces for the global traveller and urban adventurer with this capsule collection: A down-filled blazer for men and women and a unisex merino wool scarf.

The lightweight, comfortable and warm W1 blazer carries the DNA of both brands, taking its name from their shared postcode, with Canada Goose’s flagship store residing on Regent Street. Three years in the making, Henry Poole designed and cut the pattern, which was then adapted and made in Canada by the Canada Goose team.

Far from Canada Goose’s usual shape, the W1 blazer has a tailored style, with Henry Poole house buttons and inside quilting. The unique design of the quilting, colour-coded and with a dark green stitching, harks back to Henry Poole’s DNA of 1780.

But don’t think function and fashion are mutually exclusive. Together with the goose down filling, the medium flannel finish on the W1 blazer makes it very warm. On Canada Goose’s Thermal Experience index, it has a TEI 1 rating, meaning it’ll provide the ultimate in core warmth, comfort and versatility between zero and minus fifteen degrees centigrade.

So, although we might not be taking it to Antarctica, if you’ve ever found yourself a little chilly in the city, or wishing you had something more sartorially-sound to shrug on for your coastal Sunday walk, the W1 blazer will ensure you’re packing heat.

And you’ll want to take the Selvedge scarf too. Made from 100% super fine merino wool, it’s dark green with a herringbone finish and features the Henry Poole and Canada Goose wordmark logos along its edge.
