Cocktail of the Week: The Whisky Tango Trail

Add some seasonal sparkle to your Christmas parties with this ginger, whiskey and lemon-infused spin on the traditional highball…

We’re often wished a ‘sparkling’ Christmas. But what does that mean? Unlike the usual ‘merry’ or ‘happy’ tidings, a ‘sparkling’ Christmas could mean anything from enjoying a dazzling display of festive fairy lights to uncorking a particularly pricey bottle of fine champagne (if you’re looking for the best bubbles, head over to our round-up of the best bottles of bubbly).

Here Gentleman’s Journal, however, we’re firm believers that seasonal sparkle should be found in a glass — but not necessarily the flute or coupe you may expect. Instead, we’ll be spending our Decembers experimenting with longer sparkling serves; mixing new mixers with singular spirits to create extravagant, effervescent tall cocktails.

“We’re firm believers that seasonal sparkle should be found in a glass…”

This, the cannily-named ‘Whisky Tango Trail’, is one such serve. A merrymaking blend of bourbon whiskey, lemon juice and kombucha concentrate, it’s a fresh-but-festive twist on a classic highball. And the Soda Press Original Kombucha Concentrate you’ll need to whip this one into sparkling shape was created for SodaStream machines; another novel, fun way to add a little fizz to your cocktails this Christmas.

We’d recommend mixing the ‘Whisky Tango Trail’ up for the next party you host. It’s got the bubbles of bubbly, but without the need to trail around the room all night to refill guests’ glasses. Instead, it’s a gently fizzy cocktail, made festive thanks to a sliver or two of fresh fragrant ginger. And, if you’re starting Dry January a month early, a non-alcoholic option substitutes the whiskey for pineapple juice.
