Welcome to Gentleman’s Journal’s Winter issue 2024 – an elegant barnstormer of a thing which is very much the Ben Stiller, perhaps, of the magazine world: funny, handsome, well-dressed, intelligent, and playing a key role in the movie Madagascar 3.
New Year, new us! Only not really. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, we always say – and what could possibly be broke about a beautifully lit double-page spread of some of the finest (and most pungent, if I recall correctly) soft cheeses on the planet? This, and much more, greets you in our stalwart Portfolio section. There’s the wonderful Adam Pearson. The joys of Cristal Rosé. The CEOs guide to January wellness (hint: it doesn’t necessarily involve Cristal Rosé.) The return of the pea coat. The finest cars of the year. And caviar by the bucketload.
Then there’s our House Notes section, in which we ask a dinner-party’s worth of guests how to host; Ed Cumming tracks the rise of the ‘lifestyle guy’ (clue: you probably are one); we take a scroll through photographer Théo Gosselin’s sumptuous personal archive; and we hear from Jesse Burgess about another superb restaurant that’s (thankfully) hidden off the beaten track. (Order the plank salmon).
In our Features well, meanwhile, we sit down with Wretch 32, the elder statesman of British hip hop; track the restaurant dynasty that shaped dining in modern London; dive deep on the epidemic of the Rolex rippers; and descend into the glorious, scandalous enigma that is Romanée Conti.
We also meet Ben Stiller, of course, in a stupendous cover story that took place at Chateau Marmont. Two decades on from 2004, the year that installed Stiller indelibly in Hollywood’s glittering firmament, Jonny Wells meets a man who’s stepped away from the limelight for the past six years to direct, to write, and, most of all, to reflect. Shot in the place where he formed some of his most lasting (and unusual) childhood memories, and coloured in photographer Jonny Marlow’s nostalgic, warm hues, the piece has the funny sense of a homecoming, perhaps – and the discovery of a man exactly where he ought to be.
Finally, in our ever dependable Society pages, we revisit the best Gentleman’s Journal parties of the past few months; break bread with Noble Rot honcho Andrew Keeling; and step into the lost world of Jonathan Becker’s glorious photography.
