Today, however, the Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Ibiza are making a serious play to become the New Kid on the Water. This is thanks in no small part to sweeping changes in Spanish law: the newly introduced Cruising Licence for EU flagged yachts has allowed for a number of stunning vessels to head to this untapped area of the Mediterranean for the very first time.
With summer temperatures arriving as early as May and lasting right through to early October, the Balearics offer a more reliable, longer season than many other areas in the Mediterranean. Naturally, July and August remain the most popular months of year, thanks to a seasonal culture that offers both relaxation and fun by the boatload.
From Mallorca, with its sophisticated west coast and architectural splendour (not to mention its nine Michelin-starred restaurants), to Ibiza’s famed nightlife, relaxing mountain bars and white beaches, the Balearics are a yachtsman’s paradise.
A friendly tip, however: only 10 per cent of superyachts have the required cruising licence for this remarkable corner of the word, so demand always outstrips supply. Book early to avoid severe disappointment. Here are the vessels that should be on your radar:
