Whether you’re a fan or not, the Bentley Continental GT has been an immeasurable success. Originally released in 2003, its swooping curves and more-than-capable performance made it an instant hit and one that would sell in the thousands. Indeed, the Continental GT was a savour for the British marque who at the time were struggling with sales figures, largely because their design team were still stuck in the ’80s.
The GT was what Bentley needed, putting them firmly back on the map as arguably Britain’s finest luxury automobile manufacturer. Here’s a look at how the car has evolved over the years.
THE ORIGINAL GT – 2003
, Taking a whole new direction, Bentley introduced the GT at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show to critical acclaim. Unlike their previous models, the GT was always intended as a mass produced car, therefore it wasn’t coachbuilt, as was the custom for the famed marque. This of course made it a more (relatively) affordable car, although its 552bhp W12 engine made it no less desirable.
IF IT AIN’T BROKE… – 2007
, Like many of the most successful cars ever, the Continental GT didn’t need to change much. The formula was a strong one, so in 2007 a number of slight changes were enough to keep punters happy. More optional extras, including ceramic brakes and updated design cues such as a new grille and a more aggressive front end, were all that were needed.
THE SECOND COMING – 2011
, The year 2011 saw the unveiling of the second generation GT. Marking a new chapter in the car’s life, Bentley produced a number of versions within the next year, including the 616bhp GT Speed Coupe and, for the first time, a V8 model. Although always turbo-charged, the GT’s were now more efficient across the range and their interiors were completely redesigned, providing unparalleled luxury.
A RACE CAR FOR THE ROAD – 2014/15
, Inspired by their GT3 race car, last year Bentley produced their most hardcore road car ever. The GT3-R boasts a 100kg reduction in weight over the standard models as well as an increased power output to 572bhp. Limited to just 300 cars, it’s a rare beast that challenges the likes of Porsche and Ferrari in the speed stakes yet it remains comfortable thanks to its luxurious interior.
