Given the long drag that was the winter gone by, last year’s summer escape must seem like a lifetime ago. So, if you’re finally thinking of carving out some time and taking advantage of all that built-up annual leave – but are unsure of where to book a ticket to – we’ve asked a few of our most stylish friends – fashionable globetrotters who know how to separate wheat from chaff when it comes to seeing the world – about the destinations they’ve got pencilled in the calendar (as well as what wardrobe essentials they can’t go without packing).
From the vintage markets of Provence to the vibrancy of South Korea, here are a few failsafe recommendations to consider jetting to this season.
David Gandy, Model
Which holiday destination are you planning to visit in the coming months?
My partner, Stephanie, is half Greek, so we spend a lot of the summer there, in the Cyclades. We also had an early summer break in Capri. I am very fortunate that I get to travel there regularly for work with Dolce & Gabbana, for their Light Blue fragrance campaigns and events.
Why this location and what are you planning on doing?
Capri is a truly unique and wonderful island, with an incredible history that is really important to me, as I love exploring. And, when you are there with Dolce & Gabbana, you get to experience the true Capri that maybe others don’t, which is pretty special; hidden local gems that are off the tourist track, with Italians who have that authentic and unique knowledge.
What style item will you be packing and why?
I’ll be packing my David Gandy Wellwear Short Length Swim Shorts and our new Poolside Towelling Shirt and Short Set. To be honest, I pack very light for summer trips and the Towelling collection is perfect for all occasions.
Alessandro Squarzi, Creative Director at Fortela
Which holiday destination are you planning to visit in the coming months?
For the first 15 days of August, I will go with my daughter to our house in Saint-Tropez.
Why this location and what are you planning on doing?
When I’m there, I meet all my long-time friends, and, also, in Provence, there are many vintage markets that I love to visit. For the second part of the month, I’ll be with my Defender and I’ll go to Normandy. I have never seen it, so I am very excited about it; it’s all to discover. I have high expectations of finding some vintage military clothing, considering the history of that place.
What style item will you be packing and why?
My must-haves that cannot be missing in my suitcase are: white jeans, T-Shirts, a denim shirt, all made in Japan; and a pair of Mr. Fliks sneakers. They are my inseparable layers.
Charlie Casely-Hayford, Co-founder and Designer at Casely-Hayford
Which holiday destination are you planning to visit in the coming months?
I’m looking to return to Masseria Cimino, in Puglia, the first hotel I ever visited with my wife.
Why this location and what are you planning on doing?
Because of the tranquillity; the rustic, understated interiors that are set in an 18th-century fortified farmhouse; and the backdrop overlooking olive groves and the Adriatic Sea. It has only 14 rooms and feels reassuringly intimate and discreet. The perfect setting to relax and eat good food.
What style item will you be packing and why?
I’ll be taking my Armando Cabral sneakers. I generally wear very wide-leg linen-mix trousers in the evenings on holiday – and these work perfectly with them.
Lawrence Van Hagen, Curator of ‘What's Up’ Exhibitions
Which holiday destination are you planning to visit in the coming months?
I will be heading to Seoul, South Korea, at the beginning of September.
Why this location and what are you planning on doing?
Over the years, Seoul has become one of my favourite travel destinations. Not only is it a vibrant city steeped in history and culture, but it’s also become such an incredible destination for art and design. Last year, they launched the annual Frieze art fair, which is one of the main reasons I’ll be travelling out there. Excitingly, I will also be curating an exhibition called ‘12 Masters’, which will be on view at the historic home of designer Teo Yang, and it will run alongside Frieze.
What style item will you be packing and why?
My custom double-breasted linen suit by P. Johnson. As it can get pretty hot and muggy in Seoul, it’s great to have a lightweight suit that I can use while running around the city, seeing exhibitions and also wear out to dinner.
Francois O'Neill, Restaurateur
Which holiday destination are you planning to visit in the coming months?
Ibiza. My family and I are very fond of the north of the island, where life is that little slower and the natural beauty is in abundance.
Why this location and what are you planning on doing?
Both my wife and I had been coming to the island independently for years before we met. While the holiday itineraries have changed, we both still adore the island, and the people who live and travel there. We are much happier in the north of the island now, with its many secluded beaches. It’s the perfect spot for our two boys to swim and for us to unwind.
What style item will you be packing and why?
Given my job is a chef, I have grown fond of Birkenstock clogs and have found them to make the ultimate beach shoe. I will be taking my thyme suede Birkenstocks for the trip.
