What to pack this summer
Deciding what to pack for that much-needed summer break can be a tricky business. It can be all too tempting to throw in every item of clothing under the sun but this is far from efficient, and should be avoided at all costs. The trick is to pack versatile pieces that are easily interchangeable with each other, allowing you to create outfits that are effortless, stylish and above all comfortable.
Where you’re going should determine what you pack, not only in terms of bulk and weight of material but also colour. We are big advocates of packing light though, so no matter where you are jetting off to this summer, this is what you should pack.
THE BAG, , For a long weekend away, a leather holdall is your best friend. Aim for one like this Dom Reilly bag – large enough to fit all your essential summer items, small enough to lug about without breaking a sweat. Longer breaks may require a suitcase, and a suitably stylish example like this Globe-Trotter carry on would be perfect.
Dom Reilly Weekender, £1,400 from Dom Reilly // Globe-Trotter 21” Carry On Case, £995 from Mr Porter
THE SHOES, , Your shoes are without doubt the most important items to pack. Above all else they should be comfortable, as you’ll likely be doing plenty of walking on your summer travels. Versatility is key also, so we’d recommend you stick to classic styles that can be worn with pretty much anything you throw on.
Russell & Bromley Keeble 3 Tassel Loafer, £175 from Russell & Bromley // Castaner Pablo Suede Espadrilles, £75 from Mr Porter
THE JACKET, , When travelling, be that on a plane, train or boat, we’d always advise that you wear your smartest gear. Donning your blazer will stop it from creasing in your bag, but you’ll also look like an especially dapper, well-travelled gent who’s ready for both business and pleasure.
Paul Smith Navy Cotton Twill Blazer, £530 from Paul Smith // Oliver Spencer Bampton Linen and Cotton-Blend Blazer, £360 from Oliver Spencer
THE ESSENTIALS, , A slim pair of chinos or jeans will serve you well on your travels, as will a classic oxford and polo shirt. You shouldn’t skimp on the accessories either, as a signature timepiece and pair of high-quality sunglasses will finish off whatever summer ensemble you create.
Sunspel Riviera Polo Shirt, £80 from Sunspel // Etro Slim-Fit Cotton-Blend Chinos, £280 from Mr Porter // Christopher Ward C9 Harrison 5 Day Automatic, £1,500 from Christopher Ward // J.Crew Oxford Shirt, £70 from Mr Porter // Archibald Optics Ayrton, £165 from Archibald Optics // Bose QuietComfort 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones, £299.95 from Bose // Drake’s Silk Pocket Square, £55 from Drakes
