Say the word ‘Arctic’ and it probably conjures images of intrepid explorers setting off on ill-fated adventures, bleak snowy tundras and penguins huddled for warmth. It likely doesn’t bring to mind the kind of relaxing holidays you save up your annual leave for. Well, we’re here to let you know this is all about to change.
From Inuit culture to stunning natural phenomena and wildlife that can’t be experienced anywhere else, the Arctic is one of the world’s most unique and exciting travel destinations. But, to enjoy your visit to the full, it is one that requires the help of an expert – and few know their stuff better than Abercrombie & Kent.
Enlisting the aid of the 199-capacity yacht Le Boreal, whose smaller size allows it access to anchorages large cruise ships can’t reach, Abercrombie & Kent will be hosting three expeditions to the Arctic in 2020. The first, In Search of the Polar Bear, takes in the Svalbard islands and east coast of Greenland to offer eagle-eyed guests the chance to spot this magnificent creature in its natural habitat.
The second, Ultimate Iceland & Greenland whisks guests away on an immersive tour of Viking history. Taking in the remote cities of Nuuk and Qaqortoq, as well as the icy Lindenow Fjord, trace the footsteps of Norse explorer Erik the Red and other pioneering Nordic adventurers. Option three offers travellers the chance to traverse the famous Northwest Passage, from western Greenland to Alaska, stopping on the way to enjoy locations discovered by early polar explorers, including the Yukon Territory, Smoking Hills and Little Diomede.
On each of these voyages, guests will be accompanied by Abercrombie & Kent’s Expedition Team comprised of scientists, conservationists, photographers, historians and Polar Medal recipients. Tasked with bringing the journey to life, the Expedition Team will coach guests in taking perfect polar photographs, offer fascinating lectures and workshops and create unforgettable wildlife encounters.
Of course, alongside all the excitement and adventure, a little luxury is also in order. Guests on board the privately-chartered Le Boreal can enjoy a staff-to-guest ratio of 1:1.3, a choice of restaurants offering fine French-inspired cuisine (with no dreaded formal nights), private balconies to enjoy the spectacular views, exploration gear and a Traveller’s Valet laundry service.
Good job too, as, for the first time in 2020, Abercrombie & Kent will be offering the Grand Arctic Voyage – a 48-day tour which encompasses all three of the trips outlined above. Running from 31 July – 16 September, we guarantee it’s going to blow your usual fortnight on the French Riviera out of the water.
