These pyjamas will make you feel dressed up (even if you’re going nowhere)
Just because you’re confined to your couch, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look you best…
Remember the heady days of February when you used to come home from work, rip off your tie and immediately change from a suit into the comfiest clothes you had clean? The second you stepped into that super-soft T-shirt and those well-worn jeans, you were home – it was time to relax.
But now we’re all working from home (again). Those jeans and T-shirt have become your new everyday wardrobe and the separation between work and home has never been more blurred. While some may say taking a walk or making sure you only turn the TV on after 6pm are key to separating the two, we’re of the opinion the answer actually lies in your wardrobe. It’s time you invested in pyjamas.
Now, we’re not talking about that T-shirt you got after running the Hackney Half and a pair of grey Nike shorts that have been languishing in your ‘exercise’ draw for years. We mean proper tailored matching sets in fine fabrics that will make you feel well-turned out – even if it is just for your cat. Here are some of our favourites.
Keep it classic in a plain pair
Never really considered yourself a pyjama person? Trust us, they’re going to be a loungewear revelation but perhaps it’s best to ease yourself in with something simple and traditional. A block colour with piped edging is hard to beat. Opt for cooling blue cotton from Emma Willis, cosy grey linen from Piglet or, if you’re feeling really fancy, navy blue silk from Zimmerli.
Earn your stripes
Winston Churchill was famously fond of a good pyjama set and, with his no nonsense sensibility and love for a bit of luxury, we like to think he favoured stripes above all others. Paul Smith’s black, blue and red cotton pyjamas are the timeless striped set while King & Tuckfield puts a lighter spin on the style with its cream cotton-poplin style. Derek Rose, meanwhile, employs a tonal stripe for a more understated look.
Check yourself
From dainty designs to lumberjack styles, checks have been a perennial pyjama pattern for decades. If you’re missing the formality of your usual work shirt, a tailored check pyjama is a close and comfortable alternative – especially if you get yours from Royal Warranted tailor Turnbull & Asser. Its windowpane check pyjamas are as buttoned up as sleepwear gets. Elsewhere Sleepy Jones has employed a traditional Black Watch tartan for its cosy jacquard option while Ralph Lauren has opted for a light, sleep-appropriate gingham.
Don’t forget your dressing gown
A true gent knows it’s never acceptable to answer the door to your Deliveroo driver in your pyjamas so you best invest in a proper dressing gown as well. Here’s where you can really go to town with opulent fabrics and bold patterns. Liberty’s Ianthe silk robe is crafted in one of the department store’s iconic fabrics while New & Lingwood’s tailoring-inspired take lands somewhere between dressing gown and smoking jacket. For something a little simpler look to Prada and its bold jacquard robe in pure silk.
