In a knot: neckties are back

Fix up, look sharp. Neckties are back in business

The pandemic that shaped the early years of this decade also, if you hadn’t noticed, reworked the way we were dressing. With a lack of office time, formality was stripped from traditional life. Everybody took a more lax approach to dressing, favouring sweatpants and hybrid gear that worked for the park as much as it did WFH. Neckties, in particular, were certainly out. The dramatic shift in living posed the question:were ties gone for good, or would they ever make a comeback?

PRADA, gabardine tie, £260, prada.com; HERMÈS, diamond check tie,£215, hermes.com; POLO RALPH LAUREN red tie, £109, ralphlauren.co.uk; BRIONI bluetie, £220, brioni.com; DIOR MEN navy tie, POA, dior.com; DUNHILL, spotty navy tie, £195, dunhill.com; BRUNELLO CUCINELLI, cream tie, £210, brunellocucinelli.com

Fast forward to 2024 and neck-ties are back. Look to the spring/summer 2024 runways, where barely a show didn’t feature a tie. At the Prada menswear show in January, 24 of the 49 models wore ties. Prada’s creative directors Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons even sent guests neckties as the coveted invitation. Brunello Cucinelli paired wide-fronted ties with luxe linen suiting, and Dunhill’s creative director Simon Holloway teamed them with tailored suits and striped boating blazers.

Peek on TikTok or Instagram, and you’ll see that neckties are being worn with button-down shirts, navy blazers, and classic Levi’s 501s. Culty US label Aimé Leon Dore, trés cool indie label Husbands Paris and Drakes are spearheading this. And it’s a serve. Consider this your cue to knot up.
