For Chanel, Timothée Chalamet and Martin Scorsese link up
Timothée Chalamet, who fronts his first ever fragrance campaign video, is Chanel's new guy
Timothée Chalamet has long been one of the fashion industry's favourite clotheshorses. With his lythe frame, unmistakable locks and height, he looks good in just about anything, whether it's a Haider Ackermann futuristic suit in Cannes or a halterneck in Venice.
Naturally Chanel, which is one of the biggest fashion and fragrance houses in the world, has tapped him as the face of its Bleu de Chanel fragrance line up. Chalamet was announced as the face back in May 2023, and in October BTS imagery surfaced of the Bones and All actor filming for the brand, which was followed up by a 30 second ad.
Today, the full length advert finally gets it airtime. Directed by none other than film legend Martin Scorsese, Timothée Chalamet, in the new short film, ushers in a new era for the house’s iconic fragrance. It's the first time Chalamet and Scorsese, who shot the first Bleu de Chanel film in 2010, have worked together, but their magnetic pull towards each other is evident. And the ad more than does the job of selling us the aromatic, woody, grapefruit and pink pepper scent.
The new film was written specifically for Chalamet, who portrays a man who sets off on a quest to find himself, following only his own instinct. It's a nod to the world of celebrity, which can lead those in it to fall blind to reality. The film focuses on embracing one’s true essence, and Scorsese uses the power of colour to depict a psyche struggle. Contrast-filled scenes shot in black and white depict the duality between the character’s celebrity persona and his dark side, while flashes of blue symbolise hope, provide glimmers of optimism. The tag line for the ad is "find your blue, find yourself."
In a Bleu world, Chalamet is the leading guy.
