As you can probably infer from the name of the collection, the Seastar, by Tissot, is a creation for the water, whether strapped to the wrists of divers or sports enthusiasts, with roots going back to the 1950s, a decade when the Swiss label produced a hermetically sealed waterproof watch to wild popularity, one that eventually became a brand icon. This year, Tissot extends the beloved Seastar 40mm range with five new automatic models, each featuring the Powermatic 80 movement.
Rather than overhauling the design specs, Tissot has favoured discreet changes, with the casing on all models now featuring a notch design along the edges, adding a subtle hit of interest. Moreover, two models in the collection have the same stainless-steel case and bracelet, but while one dial is done out in blue, the other is in grey. There’s a bold bi-colour option with a yellow-gold-PVD bezel and black ring (the strap melds stainless steel with gold-PVD). And a pair of timepieces, in total-black-PVD-coated stainless-steel cases, offers something that’s not usually the norm within this line, with the blue brushed dial model affixed with a black tropic strap, and the grey brushed dial with a metallic all-black bracelet.
In a move that further pronounces each design, the dials are vertically brushed and fade to black when at the edges, creating both texture and a dramatic gradient. However, even with all the upgrades, the Seastar’s understated feel is still retained, thanks to the unobtrusive, medium-size case, as well as the overall classic aesthetic.
On top is a uni-directional steel bezel with a colour-printed mineral glass ring, and the interchangeable strap system – clip out, clip in – provides versatility and a bespoke spirit, allowing the pieces to be dressed up or down, whether you’re heading to the conference room or the bar.
Most important of all, the sporty feel is retained courtesy of a water-resistance up to 300m, as well as the lumed hands and hour markers, which are visible even in the dimmest conditions, ideal for when exploring the deep, splashing around the coasts of the Med, or hitting up your local lido this summer.
