Wardrobe Essential: The Peacoat

The peacoat is the most versatile piece of outerwear a man can own. It perfectly borders the line between formal and casual and as such can be worn with your suit during the working week (as long as the coat is longer than the blazer), as well as your jeans on the weekend.

Like many of the most iconic garments we know and love today, the pea coat has military origins. It was famously adopted by European and American navies during the early 20th century for its rugged, weather-beating properties as well as its smart, well put-together silhouette.

Whilst the pea coats worn by navies back in the day would have been constructed from a tough, thick wool, today designers are utilising all manner of softer, more luxurious fabrics including cashmere and shearling. The overall design has remained largely identical though, so if you’re in the market for a classic, enduring and stylish coat for winter, look no further.
