Hold onto your sofa cushions; this month will have you on the edge of your seat. Never before has Netflix ramped up the tension to such a dangerous degree — dropping thriller after thriller after dramatic, chilling thriller onto the streaming service.
From Robert Redford’s knife-edge classic, Three Days of the Condor, to a pair of mesmerising modern-day thrillers set across high-pressure kitchens and drug-dealing city streets, there’s much to keep you compelled and captivated throughout March. Add the high-octane action of Drive to Survive’s fourth season and you’ve got one of the most suspenseful, nerve-wracking watch lists of the year. Here’s what to watch on Netflix in March 2022…
Three Days of the Condor, March 1st
Whilst not *technically* a Christmas film, this New York City-set thriller takes place during the holiday season — and features plenty of carols amidst the conspiracies. Starring Robert Redford in some magnificent coats, the film follows bookish CIA researcher Joseph Turner as he scrambles to solve the mass murder of his colleagues.
Her, March 1st
Whilst it’s Redford’s coats above which impress, Spike Jonze’s Her places Joaquin Phoenix’s shirts in the spotlight. Whether button-down or collarless, the pastel-hued costume choices betray Phoenix’s washed-out, washed-up character of Theodore Twombly; an introverted writer who falls in love with an advanced artificial intelligence system.
Nightride, March 4th
Helmed by Derry-born Stephen Fingleton and starring a handful of actors from the historical drama Vikings, this thoroughly modern, real-time thriller follows a drug dealer attempting to pull off one last score. A Netflix original, it’s got frantic, frenetic shades of Uncut Gems about it — as chaos comes to the nighttime streets of Belfast.
The Andy Warhol Diaries, March 9th
Based on the iconic artist’s posthumously published diaries, this Netflix original docuseries comes from executive producer Ryan Murphy (American Crime Story, The Politician, Hollywood) and uses artificial intelligence to bring Warhol back to life. The artist himself narrates the series (diary entries were recorded by an actor, to which Warhol’s Pittsburgh accent was added using AI) reciting stories from his own life .
Formula 1: Drive to Survive Season 4, March 11th
It’s back. Once again offering unprecedented access, the latest season of Drive to Survive will take fans for another action-packed spin behind the scenes; to witness first-hand how the drivers and teams prepared to battle it out for victory in one of the sport’s most dramatic seasons to date. Hail, Caesar!, March 11th
Is it one of the Coen brothers’ best films? No. But what Hail, Caesar! lacks in substance, it more than makes up for in style — effectively and grippingly bringing to life a 1950s Hollywood backlot. The plot, which sees George Clooney’s Baird Whitlock captured by a group of blacklisted Communist screenwriters, may be thin — but cameos from Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill and Scarlett Johansson keep things moving.
The Adam Project, March 11th
Another Netflix original, this science fiction flick stars former Gentleman’s Journal cover star Ryan Reynolds. The actor plays Adam Reed, a time-traveling fighter pilot who must team up with his younger self to complete a mission that promises to save the future. Co-starring Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner, it’s a solid cast — and sufficiently starry enough for you to give it a shot.
Windfall, March 18th
Less star-studded — but exceedingly more intriguing — is this; Windfall. With Jesse Plemons, Jason Segel and Lily Collins spinning a Hitchcockian home invasion yarn, this film from director Charlie McDowell is perhaps the most promising of March’s Netflix originals. Plemons and Collins are a wealthy couple, who return to their vacation home to find Segel in the process of robbing it.
Boiling Point, March 23rd
Released last year, Boiling Point is a sharply-presented vehicle for star Stephen Graham. The British actor’s immeasurable talents are out in full force here; as his charismatic and commanding head chef, Andy Jones, must balance challenging professional and personal lives during his restaurant’s busiest night of the year. Once more; Uncut Gems energy.
Bridgerton Season 2, March 25th
And, finally, the Bridgerton behemoth returns. Last year, when we spoke to Luke Newton; the earnest, utterly charming young actor who plays the Bridgerton clan’s third son, he promised great things for the show’s second season. Bigger storylines, bigger drama and bigger hair is afoot, as we follow Jonathan Bailey’s pursuit of a new love interest, played by Sex Education’s Simone Ashley.
