Photographer's Notebook: On the road with Théo Gosselin
1. Window with a view
In 2017, two friends and I bought an old ‘73 Ford in Detroit, and drove across the USA for a few weeks. Chicago, Denver, LA, Austin. I Always loved life on the road and it’s the topic of most of my pictures, driving to the unknown, meeting people, taking pictures and drinking a lot of beers.
2. Lucas walking in the sea
This is an outtake of a series of pictures I shot in South England close to the Seven Sisters cliffs. My friend Lucas is walking in the river going to the channel. It’s the fifth of August and it’s my birthday. The location reminds me of the place I grew up in Normandy, just across the sea.
3. Night walk
My friend Emmanuel is crossing the street in Ely, Nevada. It’s minus 17 degrees, and we’re eight friends staying in one motel room. We were there shooting a short film, and the pictures I took there are some of my favorites. There’s a ‘Fargo’ feeling which contrasts with the summer road trips we usually see.
4. Sunset
In 2017, while we were travelling across the States, we stopped in a gas station to fill up the tank of our old Ford. It’s raining and the sunset is spectacular. My friend Thibault is standing on the roof. This is one of my most iconic pictures and it’s the cover of my latest book, ‘ROLL’, about six years of travelling and life on the road.
5. Early morning swim
My friends Léa and Elliot are walking back to the car. It’s 8am and they’ve just jumped in a lake with their clothes on. I play drums in a band called Gasoline, and this picture is a behind-the-scenes shot from a music video I directed for a song called ‘Feel the love’. I love the way they walked wet and close to each other.
